There are only a few years where our kiddos will permit us to rope them into (adorable) family costumes, so we have to take advantage of that while we can. There are an infinite number of costumes on the market for kids, but many are uncomfortable and/or need to be hand washed.

Raise your hand if you’ve got time to hand wash costumes.

Right. Me neither. Last year, my son wore his cow costume every day for weeks leading up to Halloween (and then for weeks after that until he grew out of it). We wore it to the park, the zoo, out to lunch…you get the idea. Needless to say, I needed a costume that I could throw in the wash and get out those grass and ketchup stains.

What are the most important components of a successful family costume?

  1. The children’s costumes can be washed in the washing machine. This is as important for baby costumes as it is for active toddlers (hellooooo spit up, so glad you could join us). Every single children’s costume below can be thrown in the washing machine (note: some do have to hang dry).
  2. The baby and young toddler options need to be super comfortable (think: pajamas). This way, you won’t have to struggle to get them inside their costume, just to take it off five minutes later. When kids are a little older, they will start to understand that costumes may feel a little different than their regular clothes. But the little ones just aren’t ready for that yet.

You’ll find a mix of traditional options for adults below, along with some more functional pieces that you may be able to get more use out of after Halloween has come and gone. Note that not all of the adult costumes are washing machine friendly.

Table of Contents

Peter Rabbit & Mr. McGregor's Garden

This theme has so many options! Peter Rabbit is, of course, the most known character of this Beatrix Potter's story, but there is also: Mopsy, Flopsy, and Cottontail, Mother Rabbit, Mr. & Mrs. McGregor, all of the vegetables that Peter nibbles on, and the flower pot that he hides in when he's in the shed! Plus, there are sparrows and a white cat that cross Peter's path too. This story makes for a great group costume of groups of all sizes.

Magic Mom Hack

A (genius) company called Little Adventure makes costumes for kids that are machine washable, have no zippers, and are made from soft material (not that cheap scratchy stuff). I highly recommend their entire line! You can check out some of their options here.

Magic Mom Hack

Pajamas can make great Halloween costume options! They’re (generally) machine washable and dryable and super comfy.

Star Wars

With so many characters to choose from, Star Wars makes a great family costume. Note that many of the children's options come in a variety of styles. For example, even though chewbaca is shown in the picture below, if you click on it, there are also options for Storm Troopers and Darth Vader.

Baby Shark

Get a shark onsie for every single member of your family...do doo do doo doo doo. "Shark attack!" is another fun spin on this, too.

Things will likely look much different this Halloween than they have in years past. Traditions may be carried out a bit differently as a result of COVID-19. But, I still believe that we have to celebrate and enjoy this special time of year.

Whether you’re shopping for one kid or many, one parent or grandparents, too– there is a Halloween costume ensemble out there that will bring to life the excitement of this holiday.

Whatever costumes you choose, cheers, to a safe and fun celebration!

Happy Halloween !
